Divergent Natural Interests (D.N.I.) is a family farm business owned by West Virginia native, Frederick Hays, and is located in Elkview in the heart of the "Mountain State" of West Virginia. An intriguing mosiac of integrated sustainable farming practices provides D.N.I. with natural grass-fed beef, agroforestry products, shiitake mushrooms, aquaponics, aquatic plants, ornamental fish, game fish, and medicinal herbs. Fred, an accomplished artist, also designs and crafts custom knives from the finest carbon steel and WV hardwoods and whitetail stag. D.N.I. is committed to the sustainable use of our natural resources and has taken a leading role in the development of alternative agriculture in the region. D.N.I. has been involved in two sustainable demonstration initiatives in Aquaculture and in Agroforestry.  Fred was nominated for the Patrick Madden award and has been a speaker for many conferences including the 2008 Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education conference.

D.N.I.'s owner, Fred Hays, is well-known throughout the region for his creativity and commitment. Hays holds a Masters degree from Marshall University and has experience in the management of both nonprofit programs and small business enterprises. He also attended Freshwater Institute workshops and was awarded several grants for his initiatives in sustainable aquaculture and agroforestry. Hays is an advocate for sustainable practices and a leader in conservation activities. He is a Certified Holistic Resource Management Educator and provides consultation services.  He is also known for his leading role in the ginseng industry and has been featured on tv and in print. His commitment extends not only to the Appalachian environment but to its culture as well. Hays is also an award-winning professional artist whose paintings have gained national recognition. His accomplishments reflect the cultural values of independence, hard work, and respect for nature.
